Lazy Bear
A 2 Michelin-starred experience that delivers food better than most 3-star places I've been to — this is the best pure meal I've had in San Francisco.
I went to Lazy Bear in early 2026, when they had their second Michelin star, and holy shit — this place is operating on a completely different level. I've been to 10-15 three Michelin-starred restaurants, and the food here was more creative, more pleasant, and more frequently mind-blowing than several of those supposed pinnacles of fine dining. When a 2-star restaurant is outperforming 3-star spots, you know something special is happening.
The standout moment was their eggs and bacon dish — served in an actual eggshell, but reimagined as this perfect fine dining interpretation. Each bite made me ridiculously happy and nostalgic while simultaneously blowing my mind. It still tasted like eggs and bacon, but somehow the greatest version I'd ever had. That's the Lazy Bear magic right there: taking familiar things and making them unbelievably excellent without losing their essence. They also do this cute trio of things that were all awesome, and honestly, all but maybe two courses absolutely hit.
The vibe has evolved too — they ditched the old communal table concept, but the whole restaurant still feels cozy and warm. The day we went, there was this nice smoky smell that felt homey in the best way. At the end of the meal, they moved us upstairs to this lodge-like lounge area for dessert courses where we got to sit on a couch instead of at a formal table. It's these little touches that make the experience feel special without being stuffy.
Look, the service is excellent and friendly, but it's not quite as precise as the 3-star places I've been to — there were some awkward plating moments and over-descriptions that felt a bit less polished. But honestly? I don't care. I care way more about the food, and the food here is just unbelievable. This gave me the same feeling as Alinea — that rare sense of having spent a lot of money and feeling like it was completely worth it and memorable. I think about this meal often, and between my dining companion and me, we've got serious fine dining experience to compare it to. This was absolutely among the standouts.
Food Rundown
Eggs and Bacon (in eggshell)
The greatest eggs and bacon dish I've ever had — served in an actual eggshell but reimagined as fine dining. Each bite is pure happiness and nostalgia while still tasting exactly like eggs and bacon. Mind-blowing.
Trio of Things
A cute presentation of three different items that were all awesome. Classic Lazy Bear approach of taking familiar concepts and making them unbelievably excellent.
Mr. Gibson Martini
The briniest, most perfect martini I've ever had. We ordered two of these during dinner because it was just that good. If you're into briny martinis, this is the holy grail.
